And most of it is brand new, which means there aren't clear industry standards yet about what's "right." Unethical care tech, even when it's well-intentioned, puts the company's interests first. It might collect more data than necessary. It might make opting out difficult. It might use manipulation tactics to keep you engaged. It might promise solutions it can't actually deliver. Here's a concrete way to think about it: An ethical care tech tool makes you feel more in control. An unethical one, even if it's helpful in some ways, makes you feel less in control, less certain, less autonomous, more dependent on the tool.
The good news? You don't need to be a tech expert to spot the difference. You just need to know what ethical looks like.
The Four Pillars of Ethical Care Tech
Ethical care tech is built on four foundations. When a tool honors all four, you can trust it. When it's weak on any of them, that's a red flag.

Pillar 2: Data Ownership and Exploitation
Your data belongs to you. Not the company. Not the government. You. And it shouldn't be sold, shared, or used for purposes you didn't explicitly agree to. This matters because your loved one's health data is intimate and powerful. In the wrong hands, it could be used to discriminate, manipulate, or profit off vulnerability. Ethical care tech is transparent about data ownership. It asks permission before sharing anything. It doesn't sell or share your data to third parties or partners. Or, if it does, you know which third parties and why it is necessary. It makes it easy to download your data or delete it completely if you want out.
Red flags:
Vague privacy policies you can't understand.
"Free" tools that make money by selling your data. (If something is free to use, ask how they make their money.)
Sharing data with "partners" without asking first.
Making it nearly impossible to delete your information.
Green flags:
Crystal-clear privacy policy.
Explicit permission is asked before any data sharing.
No selling data to data brokers or advertisers.
Easy data export and deletion.
Regular transparency reports about data practices.

Technology should enhance human care, not replace it. It should free up your time for real connection with others, not become a substitute for it. Promises that technology will "solve" loneliness or caregiving stress.
Green flags:

Features that save time so you can focus on presence.
Explicit support for professional caregivers.
Honest about what technology can and can't do.

The company is honest about what the AI does, how it works, and what could go wrong. And they take responsibility if something goes wrong. This matters because you're trusting this tool with intimate information about someone you love. Honesty isn't optional—it's fundamental. Ethical care tech explains how decisions are made. If an algorithm flags something as a concern, you can understand why. If something goes wrong, the company takes responsibility and fixes it. They acknowledge limitations. They don't oversell.

How to Spot Ethical Care Tech in the Wild
So how do you actually evaluate a tool through this lens? Here's what to do. Start with the four pillars. Before you adopt any care tech, ask yourself:
Consent & Autonomy: Can I easily understand what this tool does? Can I say no without guilt? Can I stop using it anytime?
Data Ownership: Does the company own my data, or do I? Can I download it or delete it? Are they selling it?
Human Connection: Does this tool free up time for real relationships, or does it replace them? Would my loved one feel supported or watched?
Transparency: Can I understand how this works? Does the company take responsibility if something goes wrong? Are they honest about what they can and can't do?
If you get a "yes" to most of these, you're probably looking at something ethical.
Check the company's website. Ethical companies are transparent. Look for:
A clear, understandable privacy policy (not legal jargon designed to confuse)
Information about who built this and why
Honest limitations and what the tool does not do
Easy access to support and answers
Evidence that they've actually tested this with real caregivers
Look for red flags. Walk away if:
The company can't clearly explain what the AI does

Reviews from real caregivers suggest the tool feels invasive or controlling
Ask the company directly. Don't be shy. Send an email. Call. Ask:
Where does my data go?
Who has access to it?
Can I delete it?
How does the AI make decisions?
What happens if something goes wrong?
If they're defensive or vague, that tells you something.
Trust your gut. If a tool makes you feel uneasy, even if you can't pinpoint why, that matters. Ethical tools should make you feel safer and more in control, not less.

Speak up when you see unethical design.
If a tool feels invasive, manipulative, or disrespectful—tell someone. Leave a review. Report concerns to the company. Contact consumer protection organizations. Your voice matters. Enough caregivers speaking up creates pressure for change.
Remember: You have power.
Companies need caregivers more than caregivers need any single company. You're the customer. You get to decide what's acceptable. You have choices. What you use, what you recommend, and what you reject influences the market.
